DIYÂ NATURAL POOL CONVERSIONS
WITH FLOATING WETLANDS
ONLINE COURSE
Dreaming of having your own natural pool but the cost is just way too high?
Professional natural pool conversions can cost upwards of $12 000
But what if I told you that you that the conversions above where done for under $800 (US) and that you could do it yourself in a few days?
Clean, Living Water. Chemical Free.
This is not a murky pond but a living pool with clear, inviting water that is constantly moving and trickling through a biofilter of plants. It is a very simple means to bring life to a pool and create a natural swimming environment without the harsh chemicals that cause skin and eye irritation.
Introducing the Floating Wetland
Usually, natural pools are created by building costly gravel wetlands. Floating wetlands, on the other hand, can be placed inside an existing pool. Aquatic plants then grow on the floating structure purifying the water and removing harmful pathogens.
If done right, the floating wetland is an incredibly low-cost but highly effective biofilter.
Clear Living Water
After 1 year of growth you can expect great water clarity to the bottom of the pool for 11 months of the year. The natural ebb and flow of dynamic living systems allow for tolerable amounts of algae growth. * The colour of natural water will always have an emerald shade to it unlike bright blue chlorinated water.
Low cost, Low fuss
The entire conversion can be installed in a few days and for less than $800 in materials.
WATER SAVING
The water in the pool can remain throughout the conversion.
Totally Flexible Design
Can be easily shaped or moulded to the sides of your pool in any design configuration you can think of.
Low environmental impact
No cement, no gravel, no construction.
Requires 30-50% of the pool surface area
Depending on your climate and micro-climate. Very hot climates will need 50%. Temperate climates or shaded pools only 30%

Does it Work in Hot Climates?
If you can keep the water under 26°C / 79°F - Then you are good.
Floating Wetland pools can work in hot (dry and tropical) climates, but certain measures must be taken to keep the water temperature down. These include erecting shade structures over the pool, expanding the wetland area to cover 50% of the total surface, and adding extra aeration to help cool the water.
It is also essential to address the risk of parasites in tropical natural pools by Installing a UV sterilizer OR using biweekly treatments with 30% hydrogen peroxide. This is all covered in the course.
I am in Cape Town where the hottest month is January, with an average high of 24°C/76°F and low of 17°C/63°F. I install all my floating wetlands at 30% of pool surface here.
YOUR TEACHER
ANDY JAMIESON
I am an incredibly passionate human driven by two great obsessions: natural pools and green living education. When it comes to natural pools, I pour my soul into every project, as if the fate of the universe hangs in the balance. As an educator, I approach teaching with an open heart, determined to provide you guys with the most exceptional and fulfilling learning journey possible.
I am a professional natural pool designer with a wealth of knowledge and experience crafting awe-inspiring living pools, from small floating wetland conversions to stunning 1-acre aquascapes with waterfalls and rivers. I have done it all.
My expertise began with permaculture design, sustainable landscaping, soil microbiology, and waste management, all of which fuel my love for creating living systems.
I live in Cape Town, South Africa, where I have an off-grid eco home that showcases my family's deep commitment to green living. We take recycling to the next level, cooking off biogas made from our sewerage, we harvest all our own water and recycle what is left. We also enjoy the bountiful harvest from a 165 sqm food forest we have created.
As an accredited permaculture teacher, I've had the privilege of training under renowned experts like Geoff Lawton and Rose Morrow, and I've had the opportunity to impart practical skills to over 500 students. When I'm not designing pools, you can find me pruning fruit trees, surfing waves, or strumming my guitar.
Living a sustainable lifestyle and sharing my knowledge with others brings me immense joy and fulfilment. It's a journey that continues to inspire and drive me every day.

Hear from JP & Nicol about their floating wetland conversion
When I arrived at their house, ready with a list of questions about their new natural pool, something remarkable happenedâI didn't even have to ask! I just hit record, and they started talking, sharing their experiences and insights without any prompting. Their enthusiasm and passion for their floating wetland conversion project just came right out.Â
It was super inspiring. Not only was it a ton of fun to get into my pool and get it all built within two days, it was amazing to see how inexpensive and quick and easy it is to retrofit a pool into a natural pool without having to involve an expensive professional team to do it for me.

Really enjoyed Andyâs course about how to convert your pool to a natural one. It was fascinating, fun, and amazing to learn how relatively simple it is to achieve, and also relatively cheap. I had seen a friendâs natural swimming pool, and was very impressed. I later learned that Andy was responsible for the conversion. Although I havenât got around to converting my own pool yet, itâs definitely my next project once Iâve sorted out solar energy for our home.
-Â Charles
We tried for years to clear our pool water naturally with a biofilter but it never really came right. We were interested in a system with plants but it seemed complicated and tricky as a DIY project and massively expensive if done by a contractor.
So we were very lucky to do one of Andrew's courses and now have a gorgeous floating wetland system installed. Andrew has successfully installed many natural pools so he has extensive knowledge and experience. He taught us how it works, in theory and practice, and is still available to us on a group chat with the workshop participants. As the plants grow and the water clears, we are looking forward to living with our beautiful natural pool as part of our ecosystem for many years.
- Jill
Attending this workshop has been a wonderful experience, for learning but also unexpectedly making new friends. The convivial learning experience enriched the process, we learnt with and from one another. Andrew and Arnold are extremely knowledgeable and generous with their learning, really aiming to cultivate a community of practitioners and can be influential on a global scale. This work is important when we consider the big task of cleaning water systems and the duty we have, to carry this knowledge is a gift. Highly recommended!
- Zayaan
"I cannot recommend this course enough. Andy is incredibly knowledgeable and leads the course in a hands-on, succinct manner, allowing time for questions and discussion about each participant's specific project. We came away feeling that we could really tackle such a project on our own but also that Andy would be on hand to aid or advise if required. "
